Landscape Clivias

Using Clivias as landscape subjects can be very rewarding, especially at flowering time, the wealth of colour and abundance of flowers is truely remarkable. By planning the beds in advance you can prolong the flowering period. You can incorporate the different species, as well as Interspecific hybrids, so that you can have flowers from about June/July up to October, Clivia gardenii, and Clivia robusta are winter flowering plants, Clivia miniata is early Spring flowering and Clivia caulescens flowers near the end of September, early October in the Southern hemisphere.

You will need lots of dappled shade, taking care not to have the plants exposed to midday sun. Clivias are frost sensitive, so they need to be protected in frost areas, we cover them with a frost cloth, which is removed as soon as the threat of frost has past.

Be adventerous and plant a bed of variegated Clivias, this will add interest to any garden.

My profession is always to be alert, to find God in nature, to know God's lurking places, to attend to all the oratorios and the operas in nature.
~Henry David Thoreau
