Clivias @ God's Window

Remember: Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints when visiting nature

God's Window is truely on of the most spectacular sites you will ever experience. There is such a diverse range of plants all concenrtated in one area, it is quite common to see an Aloe, growing tall in the rain forest, and at it's feet, you find a Clivia, a couple of Orchids and Plectranthrus.

Many thousands of tourists visit God's Window every year, and yet not many make the effort to take the steep walk up to the Rain Forest, but let me tell you it is worth the trip. Once up there, you are welcomed by a huge rock covered in Clivias and Plectranthrus. From there you step onto a boardwalk surrounded by a wealth of plants, just remember to stay on the boardwalk, as the area is under surveillance, and you are likely to run into security guards.

If you visit in early October you should be able to see the Clivia caulescens in flower, and this is a magnificent sight.

Tests are being conducted at the University of the Free State to determine if the Clivias in the area are infected with the Tulip Colour break virus, prelimitary tests show that a large number of plants are infected.

Note: Please do not be tempted to remove any plants from nature, they are cheap enough to purchase from any nursery, and you can be sure you will not be spreading the virus to our cultivated plants.

My profession is always to be alert, to find God in nature, to know God's lurking places, to attend to all the oratorios and the operas in nature.
~Henry David Thoreau
